Sources of Inspiration:  Imperfect, Beautiful, Loving Relationships that Last

March 28 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Event Navigation

EVENT DESCRIPTION

This workshop, Sources of Inspiration, is a discussion of a documentary that the presenters filmed of interviews with couples who have satisfying long-term loving relationships. The workshop is an opportunity to hear from several couples and reflect with colleagues on the breadth of the ways that love grows. Our hope is that participants will discover themes beyond the scope of what is familiar, and that they will feel reinforced in what is familiar to them about how love grows. We hope that this will lead participants to more capacity to inspire the couples with whom they work. Our film is an extension of work that LACEFT founding board members, Susan Thau and Sondra Goldstein began about fifteen years ago. They interviewed couples whose love had grown over a lifetime, and using these filmed interviews, presented workshops about the ways resilient couples described the success of their lifelong love stories. Their intention, similar to ours in this documentary, was to inspire in colleagues more capacity to inspire their clients, as relatively few people have models of love that grows throughout a lifetime. By participating in this workshop, you will be immersed in the extra-ordinary ways that love grows within the ordinary and imperfect lives of couples.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

After a brief introduction to the film and how it came to be, the group will view our one-hour documentary. We will view the film in its entirety, and the presenters will give the participants questions to consider while watching the film. Participants will witness the couples’ imperfections, their diversity, their challenges, their changes and their love over their years together. Then we will break into small groups to discuss the film and the participants’ reactions to it. Our hope is that the couples in the film will teach us from their life experience what lasting love is, and that they will help us reflect on our own and our clients’ experience of long-term attachment. We will then distill this as a larger group, and discuss how we can use these couples’ experiences to contribute to our understanding and appreciation of our own thoughts and feelings about long-term relationships and of the couples that we see in our offices.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This is an intermediate-level workshop. By attending, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how repairing a relationship hurt even forty years into a marriage helps strengthen a couple’s attachment.
  2. Identify therapists’ own values and ideas around what makes love last.
  3. Describe ways therapists can incorporate something of the stories of these couples to help normalize relationship struggles to couples with whom they work.
  4. Describe three ways that couples in long-lasting love relationships discuss how their bond grew stronger.

CE INFORMATION:

Participants may earn 3.5 CE credits (included in price) for attending the entire program. Partial credits will not be offered.
