EFT Couples Therapy focuses on moment-to-moment process, privileging in-session emerging attachment-related emotions within each partner and between partners. In-session emotions help therapists identify couples’ interactional patterns, and in-session corrective emotional experiences are considered change events for couples. This intermediate level workshop will utilize video-taped illustrations and role play practice to help participants learn the skill of focusing on present process to facilitate change. The workshop will also include exercises to help therapists identify their own hesitations in working with in-session emotion.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe primary emotions and attachment-related emotions and their significance in helping couples change,
  2. Demonstrate EFT therapeutic techniques for focusing on emotions when they are present in the therapy,
  3. Utilize EFT techniques for working in the present process with emotions with role play couples, and
  4. Recognize therapists’ blocks to working with in-session emotion.
